Microsoft needs better products.. not better ads E-mail

MicrosoftIn recent, not really IT related news, Microsoft is switching gears with their new Ad campaign. Semi-substantiated rumors have them "moving to phase 2" of their 300 million dollar campaign which includes a change in strategy. Rumor has it they're ditching Jerry in favor of trying to change the "I'm a PC" tag from negative to positive. There are clearly times when we wish we were Jerry Seinfeld. 10 Million dollars for 2 ads... that's good work if you can get it.

All of that being said, we cannot help but wonder what would happen if Microsoft made better products. The Get-A-Mac ads highlight the perceived and sometimes real issues with Microsoft products, in particular, their Windows operating systems. You'll note that Apple has steered very clear about bashing Microsoft Office.

Microsoft Office actually runs very well in the Mac world.

Microsoft XP is now at the SP3 level. Windows 2000 Professional took years to clean up. This is fundamentally Microsoft's problem. They just need to make better products. Sure, they're trying to support thousands of PC configurations.... but linux has the same challenge... and we generally feel the Linux OS is a better pure OS than Windows XP or 2000 Professional. So, it can be done.

Perhaps Microsoft is just too big for it's britches. There is a thing as too many software developers... to many chiefs, so to speak.

We have been forced by many clients to use Microsoft products to keep their networks running. They work... just... they're certainly no pleasure to work with. At times we're lost to understand why so many business and IT leaders blindly follow and purchase Microsoft without really doing their research. But, hey... what can we do?

Microsoft, on the other hand... really needs to take is current market advantage and use it to create better products. Numbers are showing that that lead is dwindling.

Apple now has over 10% of the laptop sales. Google released Chrome browser and continues to make improvements to it's computing model. Microsoft needs to innovate. They simply have not done enough.

Innovation and higher quality products is what Microsoft needs... not a blow for blow ad campaign against it's competitors.
